How to Wash & Care for Your Silk

Silk is a delicate, natural fibre that deserves gentle care. With the right washing and drying routine, your silk can remain soft, smooth, lustrous and beautiful for many years.

Before You Wash

Wash silk separately or with other delicate silk items.

Turn garments inside out before washing.

Hand Washing — Our Preferred Method

Fill a clean basin with lukewarm or cool water. Never use hot water.

Add a small amount of gentle, colourless liquid detergent specifically suitable for delicate      fabrics or silk.

Mix the detergent thoroughly into the water before placing the silk in the basin. Never pour detergent directly onto the silk.

Place the silk into the water and gently move it through the water with your hands.

Allow it to soak briefly, approximately 5–10 minutes. Do not leave silk soaking for a prolonged period.

Gently rinse with cool, clean water until all detergent has been removed.

Never rub, scrub, wring or twist the silk. These actions can damage the delicate fibres and change the appearance of the fabric.

A note about detergent

Silk should be washed with a very small amount of mild detergent. Avoid strong detergents, biological detergents, stain removers and products containing bleach or harsh chemicals.

If you do not have a silk-specific detergent, a small amount of a mild, colourless liquid detergent can be used. Avoid applying any product directly to the fabric. Baby shampoo is great, or colourless Sunlight liquid.

Washing Your Silk in a Washing Machine

Select the delicate/silk cycle.

Use cold or 30°C maximum water.

Select the lowest and gentlest spin setting available.

Place the item inside a mesh laundry bag for additional protection.

Never use a normal or heavy-duty wash cycle on silk. The combination of vigorous movement and high-speed spinning can stretch, crease or damage the fibres.

Rinsing

Rinse your silk thoroughly in cool water until there is no detergent remaining.

Do not wring the fabric to remove excess water. Instead, gently lift the silk from the water and allow it to drain.

Drying Your Silk

Correct drying is just as important as correct washing.

Never tumble dry silk.

Never wring or twist silk.

Keep silk away from direct sunlight.

Direct sunlight can cause silk colours to fade and may weaken the delicate fibres over time.

For delicate garments, lay the silk flat on a clean, dry towel or drying rack.

Ironing & Steaming

Silk can be gently steamed or ironed when necessary.

Turn the item inside out.

Use the lowest heat setting suitable for silk.

What NOT to use on Silk

Never use:

Bleach

Harsh stain removers

Fabric softener

Hot water

High-speed spin cycles

Tumble dryers

Harsh scrubbing, wringing or twisting

The Silk Lady’s Tip

A small amount of diluted white vinegar can be used occasionally in the final rinse to help  remove detergent residue.

Use plain white vinegar, not flavoured or coloured vinegar.Dilute 1–2 tablespoons in a basin  of cool water.

Never apply vinegar directly to the silk.
